Do Affirmations Work?

by Pete on 09/22/2007

Yesterday (9/21/07), I worked in my online T-shirt store, adding new designs and making improvements. Usually, I don’t look at how much money I’m making, if any. This morning, I decided to look at the sales figure because I do an affirmation every day to draw money into my account and I do what I can to promote my business. The figure was zero and the question to me in that moment was, do affirmations work?

While repeating my business affirmation: 100s and 1,000s of dollars in LifeSong sales are pouring into my account every day – Yippee, I remembered one of my dreams from years before. In that dream, my son, Evan, told my wife, Sandra, and I about a new insight he had just had.  In the dream, he was a Forest Ranger working at a park like Yosemite. Sandra and I had driven up to visit him and as we strolled through a meadow near the park gate, he couldn’t contain his excitement. At the time, in reality, he was still doing Speed (methamphetamine) so this dream and his insight were very important to us. Any sign of progress in fighting his dis-ease was important to me!

Sharing my dream and Evan’s insight with Sandra the next morning over breakfast, I cautioned her not to say anything to Evan because I wanted to see how long it would take for his dream insight to surface in waking reality. It happened three days later. Joining us for breakfast, he told us he had a new insight and was just as excited about sharing it with us then as he had been in my dream.

This was not the only mind experiment I conducted in my effort to help Evan survive his addiction. Another experience involved sending him healing energy while he lay sleeping in bed. The night before, one of his friends brought him home unconscious. Together we lay his limp body on his bed. Looking at his pale, skinny frame, it reminded me of a corpse.  This situation had gone on for so many years, Sandra and I were heartsick. We tried everything we could think of to help him, but now, we felt totally helpless.  We just endured.

The next day, Evan was still recovering from his binge and avoided me by staying in his room (Sandra was at work and I worked evenings). That night, after returning home from work around eleven PM, I sat in my bedroom to meditate. I felt the urge to do something different. As I wondered what to do, I remembered reading that Seth said we have the ability to imaginatively draw in the energy of an entire universe and send it out in the form of healing energy. I was so distraught by Evan’s condition, I decided to give it a try.

It wasn’t easy but I imagined myself drawing in the energy of an entire universe. I had to keep stretching myself around it like a snake. Once I had internalized all the energy of my imagined universe, I focused on Evan in the next room and sent him all the energy I had gathered into myself.

I told Sandra about it the next morning and asked her not to tell Evan because I wanted to see if he was affected by the experience. As our discussion ended, Evan burst out of his room and stomped noisily down the hallway, all smiles. As he approached us, he said, “You won’t believe the dream I had last night!”

What was it about, I asked. He said, “I can’t remember the details but it had something to do with the universe!”

Wow, speaking of affirmations – having experiences like these makes the possibility of changing the world and myself for the better more real than I could have imagined! It’s only a matter of time, clarity, intention, focus and action. If I can continue to believe in the ultimate value of my writing and designs, the money will begin to show up in my account as I imagine.

We are not human beings having a spiritual experience. We are spiritual  beings having a human experience. – Pierre Teilhard de Chardin

We create our own reality from what we choose to believe about ourselves, and the world around us.

If we do not CONSCIOUSLY choose our own beliefs, we UNCONSCIOUSLY absorb them from our surroundings.

If we are accountable (responsible) for our actions, how can we afford NOT to question our beliefs?

How you define yourself, and the world around you, forms your intent, which, in turn, forms your reality. – Seth
