Caputi's "Fallujah awakening" gives new meaning to the old adage "war is hell". It's the kind of insight we need to further spiritual awakening. Roger's premise of asking "why" is a vital tool in that pursuit.

One thing about any substance we become " addicted to" and that includes ideas as well, is that they have their appeal because they focus the mind. Perhaps only on how the next " fix" will be obtained, but a focus nevertheless. We all suffer when our minds are not focused on that which brings us satisfaction and joy, and so we " naturally " seek out something that will. There is an inner joy based on transcendental experiences that provides all we need, but our society doesn't teach those means, and so we resort to chemical substances or other stimulants. It is our innate nature to experience the fact that we are spirit/souls, independent of our physical bodies, but since our experience doesn't provide examples of that, we look to physically based ( temporal ) means . What we lack is our understanding of ourselves as spirit/souls, and as a part of All-That-Is, by whatever name you choose. And that is something that transcends our physical experience.

And, for what it's worth.....been there...done that!

I think the basic question is, can love (love of creation) be as strong a motivator as fear (fear of suffering and death)? In other words, can love (internal motivation, natural passion) compete with fear (external threat) in enabling us to cooperate in creating the kind of world we want to live in? Will we do for love, the things we do for money?

I like The Story of Stuff for the work and intent that went into it. If we want to survive as individuals and as a species, we need to start doing what's going to work best for ALL of us now. Otherwise, when the going gets tough, as it does from time to time, we'll pull out knives, guns, baseball bats, bombs and poisons to kill each other. What a way to end the dream!

Wow, John!

I remember reading about you in Parade Magazine when you were recognized as Teacher of the Year. I can't remember what year that was but it was quite some time ago. What a pleasure to cross paths with you again!

If you remember, Robert Heinlein used the working title, "Stranger in a Strange Land", for one of his books (science fiction was my childhood escape mechanism). A stranger in a strange land is how I felt growing up. Angry with the value judgment world of right and wrong, good and bad, guilt and punishment I found myself in, I reacted with fear to anything that involved psychological risk. Having grown familiar with my normal reaction to intellectual risk-taking, one day, in the middle of a mild attack of anxiety, I had the presence of mind, and humor, to ask myself, what's fear trying to save me from now?

In a value judgment world of right and wrong, good and bad, guilt and punishment, who wants to stick their head up when they're afraid it will get hammered down? What parent wants their child to take risks when there's the chance they'll be traumatized by it? Such is the power of fear! But then again, there is love and there is creativity. Our only salvation lies in the expansion of consciousness, the imagining of new and better ideas

Some of us are beginning to understand that “We are spiritual beings having a human experience” (Pierre Teilhard de Chardin), and that the interaction of consciousness and energy is the source of ALL creation. This new understanding is taking place one person at a time. Once our collective consciousness reaches critical mass, The Hundredth Monkey effect, everyone will grasp the idea.

By asking ourselves questions like, What's going to work best for ALL of us - in personal terms, and in terms of business, education, the environment and peace, we provide ourselves with a format for collaboration and discussion, not competition and debate. When we think of ourselves in terms of separateness only, we ask ourselves, what's going to work best for me? This "survival of the fittest" belief creates divisions and conflict. We go off in different directions and eventually, clash with one another.

The work being done on this website is truly amazing! If this format can be reproduced in discussions concerning business, the environment and peace (the nature of how we relate with each other as individuals and nations) we can make rapid progress in changing ourselves and the world for the better. We are not bad, it is our ideas about who we are and what reality is, that needs fixing.

There is no greater show of love than the acknowledgment of power and worth in another. When we support one another in being who we love to be, doing what we love to do, we take advantage of our natural creativity and passion. Life then becomes loving, truthful and joyful.

The purpose, or challenge, of life is to learn how to use thought in its various forms to shape energy into a pleasing reality. The prize is a sense of satisfaction, a feeling of a job well done. And, like learning to walk or talk, it is a personal, subjective endeavor that requires creative aggression. It is a great balancing act, where one must accept falling down in the course of learning how to stand up. (From: We Create Our Own Reality - http://realtalkworld.com/we-create-our-own-reality/)

The value of an idea is in the reality it creates.

I'm sure we'd all agree that war and its aftermath is hell on earth, so to speak. Nevertheless, my eyes were opened about the Iraq war and the people of Iraq when I read this book. There is a clear distinction between the Iraqi "resistance" and "terrorists". All the Iraqi people want is for America and its allies to leave them alone. The author has drawn a portrait of individuals in this country that is priceless. As we become acquainted with them we become acquainted with ourselves and our oneness with all that is.

The words you choose: "incredibly wasteful, meaninless crap, frightening", in describing your response to this article reflects out-of-hand contempt and disparagement, like you know what the truth is and this is not it. What is your truth?

The account above is an accurate account of an experiment/experience I had. Should I deny its significance because it doesn't fit inside some officially sanctioned "box" of reality? I don't think so. If I can't trust my own experience, what can I trust?

My oh my. I came across this by accident and I just had to say that even with all the incredibly wasteful material floating around cyberspace today, it still surprises me when I come upon such meaningless crap as this. Its frightening to know there might be people out there who read this and think it really means something. I think I've seen most of these words of wisdom in fortune cookies or on soft drink cups and coffee mugs around the world.
